THE HOUSE
Vaikam house is 200 years old and was bought
by Dilip Kumar's family some ninety years ago. Since then, five generations have crossed
its doorsteps. Few changes have been carried out in the structure in its history of two centuries.
It has the sloping roof and open space in its middle (for letting in fresh air, sunlight
and to drain rainwater) that characterize Kerala architecture. The ground floor-sitting area
and kitchen-has an area of 3,550 sq.ft. plus a spacious upstairs for bedrooms and WC. It
is made in the traditional way, with brick, mortar and wood, making it always pleasantly
cool inside, pulsating with the sweet memories of generations. There is a 3/4 acre backyard
with a spacious bathroom/washroom and a big well, enough to fulfill all domestic needs as
well as watering the garden and the vegetation around. Nowadays you don’t have to draw
your own water in order to wash and there is running water in the kitchen and bathroom. These
are the main innovations made, to make life easier, but taking particular care to respect
the look and the “feel” of the house, without altering its personality.
