Elapully
is a village of Tamil Brahmins who came to this region generations ago. Nowadays they speak
mostly Malayalam (the language of Kerala) as well as Tamil.
It is very peaceful, you'll hardly see any
cars and motorbikes, and you'll be surrounded by the sounds of nature.
Even in the main road leading to Palakkad,
you'll routinely see bullock carts to carry merchandise instead of trucks.
Many of the houses in the village do not have
running water and the villagers draw their water from a well in the centre of the road (more
important houses have their own well).
The central street is completely safe even
for young children to play on.
There are no shops, the milkman and the greengrocer
pass every morning outside the door to bring fresh produce.
Because of the Brahmin practice
never to eat yesterday's food,
many
families see
no point in owning a refrigerator (we only got one some years ago), as we only cook
what can be consumed the same day.
Elapully is surrounded by green rice fields
dotted with coconut palms, banana trees, henna bushes and other trees. When you don't feel
like a long excursion, you can take
lovely
long walks in the
idyllic surroundings and see children splashing in the water tank nearby .
